The Truth About Jane

Picture
Starring:  Stockard Channing, Ellen Muth, Kelly Rowan, RuPaul
Released:  2000
Drama

Jane, a high school teenager, deals with the struggles of 'coming out' in high school and the hardship of her unaccepting mother.  This is an easily-relatable movie that wonderfully portrays the feelings behind that first high-school crush, as well as the side of the parents, trying to deal with and understand the changes of their teenage daughter.

A favorite quote from the movie:  "A lesbian? It's okay, you can say it without becoming one."

For the BIBLE tells me so

Released: 2007
Documentary

An exploration of the intersection between religion and homosexuality in the U.S. and how the religious right has used its interpretation of the Bible to stigmatize the gay community.

The abuse, the shame, the killings, the hate...most will say it is because the Bible tells us so.  In this captivating documentary, researchers, biblical scholars and phsychiatrists examine the roots of popular misunderstandings and teachings of homosexuality and the Bible.  Both informative and enlightening, not only for those who have suffered the emotional and mental struggles of suppression from our families, but also for those who were taught to believe the Bible is a tool for hatred.  Emotional, heart-wrenching, eye-opening and hand-tossed with some laughter makes for the BIBLE tells me so a successful communication tool and touches viewers with glimpses into our own personal lives.

Quoted byDavid Poteat: "I had good kids. We had one of each sex. When my kids were growing up I said God, please don't let my son grow up to be a faggot and my daughter, a slut. And he did not. He did not do that. He reversed it."

A Fairy Tale
Short Film by Steven Tyler O'Connor
Starring: Steven Tyler O'Connor & Sherry Vine

This short film portrays the anxiety of prom night… to go or not to go, especially when you are gay and have no date.  Main character Jack (Steven Tyler O’Connor) magically meets fairy Godmother Rose (Sherry Vine), who comes to the rescue and puts a comical spin on the familiar fairy tales of Jack and Jill and Cinderella.  I smiled, chuckled, and certainly related to the witty euphemisms.  In 10 short minutes, Steven Tyler O’Connor brings to life the uncomfortable young adult moments we wish to forget, as well as the moments we will remember for a lifetime!  I suspect that writer, director and actor Steven Tyler O’Connor will be making waves in the LGBT community as well as the ‘movie-making’ industry!

The Hours

Picture
Starring: Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore
Released: 2002
Drama/Romance

Based on the 1999 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Michael Cunningham, The Hours is a story of three generations of women who deal with suicide.  Nicole Kidman won an Oscar at the 2003 Academy Awards for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf.

Although mentioned in VERY FEW storyline's and reviews of this motion picture, it directly portrays the struggles of living "in the closet."  The two earlier generations of women are conflicted and confused by their deep emotional and/or sexual feelings for their women friends, which directly result in suicide or suicide attempts and much depression.  Meryl Streep portrays the 2001 generation of a lesbian woman struggling with her AIDS stricken best friend.

The nine Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, are well deserved!

Quote from the movie:  Kitty says: "All my life I could do anything. I could do anything, really. Except the one thing I wanted."

Picture
Starring: Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Ethan Suplee
Released: 1997
Drama/Romance

Set in the comic book industry, boy meets lesbian girl.  Lesbian girl turns into bisexual girl and they fall in love.  If that isn't enough friction, boy's best friend and business partner becomes extremely jealous of new bisexual girlfriend.  Hence, a dramatic romance story with comedy to boot.

One of my favorite's!

A timely and historical look at the legacy of gays and lesbians in the military.

This emotional journey affects those who have served, are serving and everyone in our Nation who values the Freedom that Military men and women, homosexual and heterosexual lay their lives down for everyday.  As a newly enlisted soldier, wanting nothing more than to serve my Country for Honor, Duty, Integrity, Loyalty, Personal Courage and Selfless-Service,  I was not fully aware of the shadowed life I was facing during the implimentation of DADT.  I suffered the loneliness of hiding something that did NOT define me as a soldier, but could also crush my Military aspirations, as well as that of my family's.  A constant veil across my life to protect me, always keeping me distant from those who I stood side by side, my family away from family, that could destroy me if that veil was ever removed.  This historic account of events as documented by HBO Films  has enlightened me that throughout all of this, I was NEVER as alone as I thought.

Another incredible documentary by HBO Films.

Freak
Short Film by Eric Casaccio
Starring:  Aaron Merken

Randall, or known in drag as Sofia (played by Aaron Merken) portrays the life of a struggling actor in this 18 minute short film.  Although not all of us are actors or dress in drag, many will relate to the life stresses that create avoidance.  Most comomly avoided is the ringing phone... due to family distance and repetetive collection calls.

From desperate to confident, Casaccio delivers a happy ending that is sure to make you smile.
