Headed to Provincetown with no place to stay? Try Horizons Beach Resort in North Truro, MA12/19/2012 Inexpensive and a short drive from Provincetown -- Horizons Beach Resort Why is it that the spontaneous, unplanned trips end up being the most fun? In early October, we received a call from a group of friends who were heading to Provincetown, Massachusetts for Women's Week. We thought about the idea of a quick getaway trip -- for about 30 seconds -- and quickly responded "we'll meet you there!" Since 1984, the women innkeepers of Provincetown have been hosting what's known as "Women's Week," which is a week long celebration, including hundreds of social events, that cater to women but certainly don't exclude others. To read the full story behind Women's Week, click here. With less than a week's notice, we now faced the issue of finding accommodations. I tried to call a few of my favorite B&B's, located in the heart of Provincetown, but everything was booked. Luckily, we planned to make the trip by car rather than bus, plane or train, which gave us the option of staying on the out-skirts of town. In North Truro, a small tranquil town that sits less than 5 miles from Provincetown, we found Horizons Beach Resort. They offer newly remodeled efficiency units on the beach, ocean view units at Terrace Dunes, two bedroom poolside units, or a unit at the unique Pagoda complex. All accommodations feature kitchens, air conditioning and cable televisions; and most units offer a balcony with views overlooking the bay. The accommodations also offer a private beach, although campfires on the beach are not permitted. (We tried). Room rates are approximately $150.00 per night, during off-season, which runs April 6 to June 22 and then from Sept. 3 to Oct. 28. During peak season, rates jump to $250 a night, which is comparable to the rates of most B&B's located directly in Provincetown. Truthfully, Horizons Beach Resort is basically a motel that sits on the water, so please don't be confused by their title of "Resort." All-in-all, I would give them a fair review since our room was clean and we were able to save money by stopping at the local market to fill our in-room refrigerator. That, along with being less than 5 miles from all the action during Women's Week, gives no room for complaining. From lush tree covered mountain ranges to the picturesque sand dunes of the coast, Massachusetts is a state that does not disappoint any visitor. From hikers and campers to history and ghost enthusiasts, the entire state is a theme park of life no matter what the interest is! Martha's Vineyard The 87 square mile land mass of Martha's Vineyard is primarily known as a summer colony, and is accessible only by boat and by air. Cost of living on the island is approximately 60% higher than the national average and housing prices are about 96% higher. Although not a single's destination like Provincetown, upscale and gay-friendly Martha's Vineyard shouldn't be missed for a scenic and romantic getaway. Besides, it's home to the Dike Bridge and Gay Head Cliffs... The Humpback whale is such a fascinating mammal to watch for its acrobatic entertainment and singing. While there are many opportunities available, one of the most popular is Cape Ann in Gloucester, Massachusetts for an awe inspiring sight of these magnificent wonders. The Humpback Whale is an endangered species with little over 10,000 - 15,000 whales worldwide. Their colors range from white to grey to black to mottle and these gentle giants grow to 52 feet long, weighing anywhere from 25-50 tons and living approximately 45-50 years. The amazing mammals frequently perform aerial displays such as breaching (jumping out of the water), and will gracefully swim on their backs with both flippers in the air. "Tail lobbing" (raising their huge flukes out of the water and slapping them on the surface) and "flipper slapping" (using their flippers to slap the water) are also common behaviors...also important for whale communication. This truly magnificent marine mammal travels a great distance to take advantage of the best breeding grounds and feeding spots, and are famous for their singing abilities. While both males and females can produce sound, only the males appear to produce long, varied, beautiful songs with distinct themes and melodies. It is believed this is their mating call to advertise their availability to passing females. The songs last for 10-20 minutes, heard up to 20 miles away and researchers have yet to learn exactly how the whales produce the sounds, as these whales have no vocal cords. It is assumed they sing by circulating air through the tubes and chambers of their respiratory system for no visible air escapes and their mouths do not move. Massachusetts is a chosen favorite to experience the Humpback whale in all of its awe and wonder.
