Giovanni's Room has been selling Google eBooks, but that program will end in January 2013. "We are pleased to offer our customers a broad and diverse eReading choice," said store owner Ed Hermance. "By working with Kobo, our store offers our customers an extensive catalog of the ebook titles our customers love and want, and a choice of innovative new eReaders at affordable prices. Now we can continue to offer our loyal customers the chance to buy ebooks and support their favorite bookseller at the same time." The stores have also come together to become sellers of Kobo eReaders, a Consumers Report Best Buy, for their reasonable price and up-to-the-minute features. "By combining Giovanni's Room's announcements of new books and ebooks in our specialties with the offer of five million books and three million ebooks in all subjects, the store offers people a way to support us by buying all their books and ebooks through us," Hermance said. Historical Commission's historical marker honoring the store's contributions to the state. We think the text of the marker will read, "Founded in 1973 and named after James Baldwin's second novel, Giovanni's Room served as a bookstore, clearing house and meeting place at the onset of the lesbian and gay civil-rights movement, a time when one could be ostracized, arrested, or fired for loving someone of the same gender." We'll know for sure when the sign is unveiled. ![]() Lazaro Lima, with Emanuel Xavier, Charles Rice-Gonzalez and Steven Cordova Where & When 345 South 12th Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19107 Friday, October 7, 5:30 to 7 pm Co-editor and contributors to Ambientes: New Queer Latino Writing, edited by Lazaro Lima and Felice Picano (U. of Wisconsin, $22.95 pb). Co-sponsored by Philadelphia's new umbrella group of LGBT organizations. As the U.S. Latino population grows rapidly, and as the LGBTQ Latino community becomes more visible and a more crucial part of our literary and artistic heritage, there is an increasing demand for literature that successfully highlights these diverse lives. Edited by Lázaro Lima and Felice Picano, Ambientes is a revolutionary collection of fiction featuring stories by established authors as well as emerging voices that present a collective portrait of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender experience in America today. With a preface by Picano and an introduction by Lima that sets the stage for understanding Latino literary and cultural history, this is the first anthology to cross cultural and regional borders by offering a wide variety of urban, rural, East Coast, West Coast, and midwestern perspectives on Latina and Latino queers from different walks of life. Stories range from sensual pieces to comical romances and from inner-city dramas fueled by street language to portraits of gay domesticity, making this a much-needed collection for many different kinds of readers. The stories in this collection reflect a vibrant and creative community and redefine received notions of "gay" and "lesbian." Covering the ins and outs of sex toys, sex aids, and positions for larger lovers, this guide also takes on tricky topics like the fear of being seen naked and living in a culture where no body is ever perfect enough. Featuring advice on medical issues and activism, along with expert interviews on topics like fat-admirer culture, "Big Big Love" tackles every hot-button issue people of size will confront in the bedroom and in love. Where & When 345 South 12th Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19107 Saturday, October 15, 5:30 to 7 pm. Above all Papaya Suite is a ludic novel. It is both a musical suite and a literary text about the experiences and sexual exploits of a young woman who flees Cuba as a political exile for Spain and refuses to let others confine her in an alien closet and then makes it to the United States and begins her adult life in full. As much an exile memoir as a true Cuban bildungsroman narrated from the point of view of a non-apologetic lesbian who takes on life with gusto. A road novel with an promounced Cuban-American flavor. This is the first book published by this Philadelphia publisher.
