At the age of 7 when the movie Little Darlings aired, long before I knew I was a lesbian, or even knew what a lesbian was, I was completely intriguied with Kristy McNichol's performance and role as the shy tomboy "Angel." I wasn't sure if I wanted to 'be her' or 'be near her' but I knew that she definetly had an unresistable swag!
McNichol has a lengthy resume, with several awards including; a 1977 Emmy, for Family 1979 Emmy, for Family, 1980 People's Choice Award for "Favorite Young Motion Picture Actress," 1982 Young Artist Award for Only When I Laugh, and a 1989 Razzie Award for Two Moon Junction, but here are some interesting facts that you may or may not know... probably depending on how old you are!
Kristy released an album with her brother Jimmy in 1978, recorded by RCA and promoted it at the infamous Studio 54 in New York City. (No wonder she was later diagnosed with a drug addiction.)
Her first feature film was cast with Burt Reynolds in the comedy The End, in 1978.
Little Darlings released in 1980.
By age 19, she was earning a six-figure salary.
After much drug abuse and an acting career that lasted just about a quarter of a century, McNichol was diagnosed with Bi-polar Disorder.
I would like to extend a personal thank you to Kristy for her honesty in coming out as a lesbian to the media on January 6, 2012 in an effort to help young LGBT people and the bullying crisis.
Here's a flashback clip from the movie Little Darlings:
