The Anti-Bullying Seths Law or AB 9, passes in California Senate

On September 2, 2011 California State Senate approved Seth's Law (AB 9), a bill designed to enact policies on the harassment of LGBT students in California schools.

The Law is named after Seth Walsh who attempted suicide and died as a result of the sustained injuries from his attempt in 2010.  Seth was only 13 years old.  Although the police investigation provided evidence of the bullying,  no criminal action was taken against the students.

As stated by Equality California:
Although California has adopted anti-bullying legislation, LGBT youth are still subject to harassment, intimidation and bullying. Seth's Law will tighten anti-bullying policies in California schools by ensuring that all schools have clear and consistent policies, instituting better training and clearer guidelines for teachers and administrators, and establishing shorter timelines for investigating claims of bullying. AB 9 will help create a respectful and safe environment for all students.
